The licensing process explained in simple terms: how the step-by-step purchase of a licence from Halidon Music works

If you want to use certain music tracks for a corporate project, a YouTube video or on a social channel, it is essential to understand the licensing process, i.e. the acquisition of the necessary rights to use the music. In this article, we explain how the licensing process works at Halidon Music, from selecting the song to signing the agreement.

  1. Selecting the Right Track
The first step in licensing music ischoosing the right track for your project. Halidon Music has an extensive library of high quality music covering a wide range of genres and moods. Once you have found the track you are interested in, you can proceed to apply for a licence.
If you don't know where to start, read our article on How to choose the perfect music for your brand or project
  2. Understanding the Rights Needed
Not all licences are the same. When you buy a CD or download a song from a store like the Halidon Music Store, you only get private listening rights. This means that you cannot use the music in videos or public content without first purchasing synchronisation rights.
For legal use in a video or commercial project, two types of rights are required:
    • Master rights: held by the owner of the audio recording.
    • Editorial rights: held by the authors, composers and publishers of the music.
  3. Buy a licence
Once you know what rights you need, you can buy a licence directly from Halidon Music's licensing platform. For example, the personal use licence you can find on our portal includes both publishing and master rights, allowing you to use the music for personal projects such as social media videos, educational videos or non-commercial content.
If you want to use the music for commercial purposes, such as commercials, TV programmes or films, you will need to purchase a specific commercial licence. In this case, you can contact us directly for a customized quote based on your needs, which will include details such as the type of production, duration of the licence, broadcast territories and media involved.

  4. Social Media Video Licences
If you want to use the music you have purchased in a video to be uploaded to YouTube, Instagram, Facebook or other social media platforms, you can do so as long as you have purchased the appropriate licence. The 'Personal Use' licence you purchase from Halidon gives you all the rights you need to use the music on your social channels for non-commercial purposes.
Remember that music downloaded from unauthorised sites cannot be legally used in videos on YouTube or other platforms, even if the video is for non-commercial purposes. It is always better to buy a licence from legitimate platforms such as Halidon Music.
  5. Music for Educational and Private Projects
If your project is for educational or private use, you will again need to purchase a special licence, which can be obtained directly from Halidon's licensing platform. In general, licences purchased through Halidon cover personal and educational projects, but are not valid for commercial use.
  6. Public performance and TV rights
If you want to project or broadcast a video with music in public spaces or on TV channels, you will need to obtain a public performance licence in addition to the synchronisation rights. This type of licence is usually applied for through the SIAE (or the national office if you are abroad) for public performances of music, such as at events, trade fairs or in commercial premises. For television broadcasting, broadcasting rights are managed directly by the broadcasters.
